Michi-no-Eki Esashi 江差

Small and characterful, Esashi in southern Hokkaido has parking for just 20 cars and 6 large vehicles on Route 227, at Shigejiro Beach. It honours Shigejiro, the Edo-period wit whose jokes made him a folk hero in this herring town, in a gabled building built from local hinoki wood to evoke the old herring fisheries.
